THEY WON’T GET NO EDUCATION

Adults should rule children; children should not rule adults. However, in schools around Earth, children have too much power and teachers too little. The tragic and infuriating result is that children are not learning the basics well, including reading, writing, mathematics, respect for their fellow humans, and obeying good rules. Yes, there will be bad students and bad parents; but public schools should be set up to deal wisely with them, not cave in to them. An irrational parent should basically be told, “I’m sorry that you don’t like your public school’s policy. Feel free to homeschool your child or place him or her in a private school. Thank you. Have a nice life.”

I am a former public school teacher, and this is my protest song. It is based on “Another Brick in the Wall” by Pink Floyd–the song that describes oppressive teachers with the chorus “We don’t need no education.” Yes, sometimes schools and teachers have been too oppressive; and that’s bad. But it is also bad when the schools and teachers aren’t strict enough. Yes, people do need an education; but if schools are metaphorical madhouses that are run by the patients–and too many of them are–then they, the students, won’t get no education; and good principals and teachers will keep quitting.
